- 5 Speed Time - Tremec TKO, Shifter and more
EDIT: Although tagged as a "3550" this is a true Ford TKO
with the 26 spline input shaft and 31 spline output. Per ModerDrivelin.com
-
"Ford TKO transmission has the same layout and gear ratio as the
3550 but with stronger 26 spline input shaft and 31 spline output shaft
and stronger 3rd gear. It is torque rated to 450ft/lbs. A new 31
spline slip yoke is provided with every new TKO that is compatible with
the standard u-joints"
Although I'm really not ready for this, I couldn't pass up the
opportunity to pick the deal up. Advertised only as a "TKO", it
is actually a TR-3550 TKO which is exactly what I have been watching and
looking for. Plus it was within 30 miles from home so I saved shipping. I
still plan to replace the bell housing with a scatter shield in the end
but at least I can get the slave cylinder and rear cross member worked
out.
To add more value to the deal it came with a Pro 5.0 Power Tower
shifter and handle. Just need to get a shifter knob and boot to fit and
that area is taken care of. The trans also has the neutral switch with the
pigtail. It also has the backup switch ready to use. The yoke was included
as well which saves time digging one up although I think I have an old C6
one that would have worked.
Also included are two used clutch and pressure plates. The one on the
left is a Center Force and the right is a higher performance Spec Stage 3
unit. Not sure if I'll end up using them but again one will be great for
mock up and testing.
An HPM Fox body cross member was also part of the deal. I'll decide to
either cut it up and use parts of it to fit mine or sell it and use that
to apply towards a pre-made conversion cross member
One final piece of this deal as the EFI distributor. I have been
trying to get a decent deal on one to round out the EFI parts needed. The
TKO owner had one listed and we included it in the deal. New rotor and cap
to boot so just some more cleanup needed and it's ready to use.
I've already performed some measurements and checked the above cross
members I have. Nothing is close enough so I'm sure I'll sell the HPM
cross member and use that money towards a TKO unit for a 69/70. I've used
one or more of those for FMX, C4 and C6 installs in the past.
Final inventory before final install. Here is all the front suspension
pieces except for splash shields which still need blasting and painting. I
did not grease anything for the initial mock up and test fit. Time to
check everything again, grease all the points and then do a final install
for the front end.
Here is my el-cheapo way of testing/setting ride height up front until
the engine/trans is installed. I had thought of building some temporary
struts to hold the front proposed ride level until I am ready to install
springs, but believe a couple of tightly clamped hose clamps should hold
the car at the height I want until then. I haven't added the second set of
clamps on these yet to insure a good grip.
